Steve Jansen Interview 1983 480p Quality
originally transmitted 3.10.83. Steve Jansen interview about future projects.
love Steve in this, don't think any of the Japan guys liked doing press. in this the interviewer acts like it's a job interview, he's the same in the David Sylvian and Mick Karn interviews too..

Never seen before or after. An uncomfortable David Sylvian performing the single best single of all time. A historical moment in popular culture history.

Japan was a band so far ahead of everybody else, 40 years later the world still tries to keep up with them, in vain

This is the kind of bass playing that makes aspiring bass players throw their shit in the trash can and pick another instrument. RIP Karn

I've recently taken up playing bass (having previously played guitar). Whilst there's a lot that is shared between the two, the techniques for 'proper' bass playing are something of a steep learning curve! Watching Japan's bass player, i have a new level of respect for artists who can do what he does!

Love it when the mix has Mick's bass up front. I'm guessing he may have made it a point by the time they recorded this.

I'm a new fan, having just discovered "Gentlemen..." two years ago. So even with many suggestions that Japan took directly from Roxy Music and Bowie's "Berlin" era... look how important they became to the development of the New Romantic style... Duran Duran of course, but also Gary Numan, Soft Cell, Eurythmics, I would even call The Cure around the era of Pornography/Japanese whispers. And the bass style in Paul Young's songs... I knew all this above well, but after listening to "Oil on Canvas" I realized who did it first. Japan

Good song, but doesn't sound like a typical single. Surprised it did so well. It's always a nice surprise when the general public picks up on a quality song or album that's outside the mainstream box.
